Explore the Microbial World

Microorganism is an important part of our everyday life. They influence human and animal health, food production and safety, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and the environment. While some microorganisms cause disease, many are beneficial and are widely used in medicine, food production, industry, agriculture, and environmental applications.

The Bachelor of Science in Microbiology at American International University-Bangladesh combines scientific knowledge with hands-on laboratory training, research, field visits, and internship experience. Students study important areas such as bacteriology, virology, mycology, immunology, microbial genetics and molecular biology, food and pharmaceutical microbiology, environmental microbiology, and public health microbiology.

The programme also introduces to students the laboratory quality systems, biosafety, research ethics, and internationally recognized practices and guidelines such as ISO, WHO, and US FDA requirements, where relevant. The aim is to develop graduates with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional confidence needed for industry, healthcare and diagnostic laboratories, research, public health, entrepreneurship, and higher education.

Practical Laboratory Training

Laboratory work is an important part of the programme. Students gain hands-on experience in microbial culture, microscopy, staining, isolation and identification of microorganisms, aseptic techniques, sterilization, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

Training also introduces to students the biosafety, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), quality assurance, laboratory documentation, and waste management.

Facilities and Research

Students have access to well-equipped Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) and Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) microbiology laboratories, along with automated microbial identification systems, biological safety cabinets, advanced microscopes, fermenters, centrifuges, freeze dryers, and ultra-low-temperature storage facilities.

Students are also encouraged to participate in research in areas such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR), probiotics, food safety, fermentation, beneficial microorganisms, and microbial product development, providing practical exposure to current areas of microbiological research.

International Standards and Professional Readiness

The programme is designed with reference to relevant ISO standards, WHO, US FDA, and other internationally recognized guidelines and practices. Students are introduced to laboratory quality systems, biosafety, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), documentation, risk management, and quality assurance. This exposure helps prepare graduates for industry, diagnostic and research laboratories, regulatory environments, and higher education.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may pursue careers in diagnostic and clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, food safety, quality assurance and public health organizations, hospitals, agriculture and livestock facilities, environmental laboratories, research organizations, universities, and regulatory agencies.

They may also continue to MSc, MPH, MPhil, PhD, or other specialized postgraduate programmes.
